Botanical bouquet on the thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A woman in denim shorts shows a colour tattoo of a flower bouquet on her outer thigh. The bouquet includes a large red poppy, a pink peony, purple foxglove spikes and small red and yellow blooms, with dark green leaves and stems tied at the base. The shading is soft and the background is a sunlit beach, with the tattoo centred on the frame and the camera held at the right.

The mule has stopped again at the second switchback, and you let it, because the wind up here smells of snowmelt and crushed thyme and there is no hurry left in the day. Your satchel is already heavy with blotting paper. Maren swore the foxgloves would be over by the pass, and she was wrong, so the spikes you find on the shoulder of the col feel like a small triumph, purple and freckled like the inside of a shell.

You kneel on the scree and cut what you need with the little folding knife your father carried to Lisbon. A poppy, its petals thin as tissue and bleeding where the stem snapped. A peony that has no business growing above the treeline, pink and stubborn, the only one for a mile. A clutch of buttercups, a marigold gone orange at the edges, a sprig of something blue you cannot name. You tie the stems with a strip torn from your sleeve, and the bundle looks almost tidy, almost like something a person might carry down to a wedding.
Anselm watches from his pony and says the pass belongs to the goats until September, and that a woman alone should not linger past noon. You tell him you are not alone, that you have the flowers for company. He snorts and offers you a heel of bread, which you accept, because he is right about the cloud. It is already pouring down the far side like a dropped sheet, and the valley below has vanished.
By nightfall the blooms will have wilted in the inn's damp air. But you will have pressed them between the pages of Maren's letter, and when she opens it in Vienna, the mountain will come out of the paper smelling faintly of rain.
