Lace garter tattoo with bow on thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a lace garter band wrapped around the thigh, with a bow tied at the front and a second garter band further up. The lace pattern uses dark outlines with soft grey shading, and the scalloped edges are clearly defined. The image is in black and grey against pale skin and a blurred light background, with hands holding a dark skirt at the top of the frame.

The last of the lace is coming apart at the scallops, and you are the only one left in the company who knows how to mend it. Mr Feld's big top has three rows of empty benches now, and the sawdust smells of wet canvas and the paraffin lamps they light to save the generator. The garters were stitched from a bridal veil bought at a Hull auction the year the trapeze act left, and nobody has found a better lace since. You hold the band up to the lamp and count the holes like rosary beads.

In the caravan you sit with a tin of pins, a spool of black silk and a satin ribbon you have tied and untied eleven times. The bow must look as if it was knotted in a hurry by someone who meant to come back for it. Outside, Tomasz walks the old elephant through the rain, and the bell on its harness comes and goes across the mud like someone counting. He should be at school in Leeds. Nobody has the heart to send him.
On the final night the band plays to fourteen people and a wet dog. In the wings you hand over the repaired garter, and Ilona checks the bow with her thumb, the way a surgeon checks a stitch, and says nothing at all. When she comes off she presses the spare pins back into your palm, one at a time, and says that lace always outlasts canvas. Everyone forgets the tent first.
After the lamps are doused you walk out to the ring. The bow is lying in the sawdust where it fell from a costume trunk, a little flattened but whole. You pick it up, shake the grit from its loops, and pin it to the lapel of your coat, where it stays until morning.
