Lace garter with bow on thigh

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A pair of thighs with a lace garter tattoo wrapped around each one, the left with a central bow. The lace is shaded in soft greys with fine, detailed scalloped edges and some contrast in the bow. The background is a blurred outdoor scene in muted, warm tones.

The miller's daughter Hester came to her the week before the banns were read. She had no coin, only a skein of grey thread spun from her dead mother's shawl. Mary took it without argument. She worked the scallops along the edge as fine as frost on a pane, and at the centre she tied a bow so small it might have been a moth resting.

On the wedding morning the rain stopped just long enough for the bells. Tom Ferris, who had walked behind Hester's cart for three miles pretending not to watch the road, caught the garter when it slipped during the dancing and held it up to the lamplight. "Your mother's thread," he said. Hester nodded, because he had asked her about it and listened to the answer.

Forty winters later the lace had faded to the colour of ash, and the loops of the bow had gone soft. Hester wrapped it in tissue and gave it to her granddaughter, who asked why it was worth keeping. "Because it was tied slowly," Hester said, and put the kettle on.
