Palm tree and ship on the lower leg

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A bare leg is photographed on a sandy beach with a green palm tree, a red hibiscus flower, blue waves and a small rising sun above the words ENDLESS HOLIDAY. A sailing ship with grey shading and dark sails runs down the shin beneath them. Bold outlines and flat fills in green, red, blue and grey give the piece a classic traditional look.

The copper pan had gone green at the rim again, and Dilys scrubbed at it with sand and vinegar while the galley swung on its chains. Through the scuttle she could see the grey length of the Marigold leaning into the swell, her sails dark against a sky the colour of wet slate. Tom, the boy on peeling duty, kept dropping potato skins on the deck and watching her hands instead of his knife.

Above the stove hung the board Ned Pascoe had painted the year before, after a fortnight in Port Ferrol had left him broke and happy. ENDLESS HOLIDAY, in red and blue letters, with a palm tree leaning off the corner as if it were trying to read them. Captain Haskett had ordered it scraped off twice. Twice Dilys had told him it kept the biscuit weevils honest, and twice it had gone back up, a little more faded each time, the paint cracking where the heat from the range reached it.

On the fourth morning of the calm, the lookout called land, and the crew came up the ladders as though someone had rung a bell. It was a low island with a single palm and a scatter of red flowers along the waterline. Ned stood at the rail with his hat in both hands. Nobody said the island looked like the board. Nobody needed to.

That night Dilys banked the fire low and sat on the step with her boots off. The wind had dropped and the sea lay flat and shining under a small sun that would not set. Tom came up beside her with a handful of shells from the beach and asked how long a holiday lasted. She told him the same as the tide, which was to say until somebody noticed the water had turned.
