Botanical flower and leaf tattoo on hip and thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of flowers, buds and leafy stems climbs from the hip down the outer thigh, with one larger five-petalled bloom at the top. The design uses fine black outlines with light shading on the petals and leaves, giving a delicate, engraved look. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against bare skin and a yellow bikini, with the torso and thigh cropped in the frame.

Cook Halloran had been told to tip the botanist's crate over the rail before the Cape, and he had nodded the way a man nods to a captain. Instead the crate went under the galley bench, wedged between the flour sacks and the dried peas, and every night he lifted the lid to see whether the pressed sprigs inside had decided to be anything else.

They had not. Each one lay flat between tissue, labelled in a hand that slanted like driven rain: a five-petalled bloom, a bud still folded shut, a leaf cut into teeth. The ship's boy, Tobias, could not read the labels but could count, and he laid the sprigs out in order on the copper lid of the stockpot while the bread rose. He copied each one into the soot with the charred end of a skewer until the galley smelt of scorched fat and something sweeter underneath.

On the Thursday before Madeira the first mate found the pattern on the bulkhead above the range. He stood a long time in the heat, then asked who had drawn it. Halloran said the boy. The mate said nothing, only went to his cabin and came back with a pencil and a fresh sheet of paper.

They kept the seeds in a tin of wet sand beside the stove, and the mate drew stems down the wall as the weeks went by, so that by the time the brig turned for home the flowers were climbing toward the lamp. Halloran still has the box. He keeps the labels, and he has never thrown anything overboard since.
