Rose-filled cat silhouette on the ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A cat silhouette sits along the side of the ribcage, filled with clusters of pink roses, buds and dark leaves. The black ink forms the cat's outline and body, while the roses add warm pink and red tones. The tattoo is shown from the side against a pale background, with a striped top and dark trousers partly in frame.

The lift in Harrow Court had been broken since the March floods, so Dolores Penn carried her shopping up nine flights and spoke to the cat on every landing. It was a black cat with no collar and no name that anyone would own up to. It came and went through a gap by the bin store, and it had a way of sitting on the third-floor railing as if it were waiting for a bus.

Nobody planted the window boxes along the east walk, but they were full of roses. Pink ones, then red, with buds the size of thumbnails and leaves as dark as wet slate. The council said it was a grant. Dolores said it was the cat, and she said it standing in the car park with her hands on her hips, because she had seen it walk the length of the balcony one dusk, and every pot it passed came up in bloom behind it.
In the summer a man came from the council with a spray gun and a clipboard to clear the walkways of growing things. He did the first two floors without bother. On the third, the cat sat on the rail and watched him, and when he lifted the gun the roses climbed up over his boots and round his shins until he laughed and put the gun down. He wrote 'no action required' on the clipboard and went back to his van, and he was never seen on Harrow Court again.
Dolores still takes the stairs. At the bottom of the stairwell, where the light from the broken door falls across the tiles, the cat sleeps with its tail laid out along the steps. The roses have come down the wall after it, and the whole block smells of them in June. The children say it is the cat's doing and their mothers say it is the council, and neither of them has ever been wrong.
