Cat silhouette filled with roses on ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A black cat silhouette in profile curls along the side of the ribs, with pink roses and green leaves filling its body and tail. The black areas are solid and the flowers are shaded with soft tonal gradients. The tattoo sits against plain skin, with a striped top and dark jeans in the frame.

Her husband, Dennis, said it was a shadow that had got above itself. The nursery had been losing its hellebores to slugs since March and he had no patience left for anything that did not earn its keep. But the cat had come in with the November frost, thin as a rake handle, and it had cleared the mice out of the potting shed without being asked. Nobody owned it. Nobody had thought to.
Then in the spring the roses came up through the flagstones where the cat slept, pink as the inside of a shell, one bush after another, climbing the wall in the exact shape of its back. Dennis swore at them, then stood a long time looking. By June the bed held a dark outline, a cat curled to the tip of its tail, and the flowers filled it so thickly you could not see the stone beneath.
The cat was gone by August. Mrs Okonedo never found where it went. She only knew that when she knelt to deadhead the bush at the tail, the thorns were warm, and the petals there were always the last to drop.
