Colour botanical tattoo of flowers, leaves and sprigs across a woman's shoulder and upper arm, photographed from behind.

Botanical flower sleeve on shoulder and upper arm

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A cluster of flowers, including wild rose blooms, daffodils and tall blue spiked blossoms, sits with green leaves and fine dark sprigs that run from the shoulder down the outer upper arm. The petals and leaves are shaded softly with black outlines and dark accents, while the flowers use peach, ochre, yellow and muted blue-grey tones. The design curves diagonally down the arm and fills the frame with a full, layered bouquet.

Dear Nell,

The frost has got into the top field again, and the ewes have started looking at me the way they do when the hay is running low. Dad would have had the barn doors pinned shut by now. I have been doing the sums on the feed bill at the kitchen table with your old pencil, the one with the teeth marks, and they do not come out kindly.

Still, you will be pleased to hear that the daffodils you planted by the gate have come up. Three green spears, poking through the mud as if they have heard a rumour nobody else has. I know it is far too early. Mrs Hale from the lane says it means a hard spring is coming, but she says that about everything, including the cuckoo.

The lupins by the wall, the blue ones you were so cross about, have kept a few dry seedheads, and I cut them for the windowsill. The wild roses along the hedge have gone to hips now, scarlet as boiled sweets. I pressed a rosemary sprig from the back step inside the Bible, the way Gran used to, because I wanted something in the house that smelled of summer.

Come home at Easter. Bring the boy and leave the car at the top of the lane, because the drive is a skating rink. I will put the kettle on and we can stand at the gate and count the shoots together. If I am honest, I have started to believe in them.
