Wild roses and lupins on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A sleeve-style floral piece shows two large pale pink wild roses with yellow centres, with blue lupin spikes and sprigs of feathery foliage above them. Lower on the arm, yellow and orange blooms and green leaves fill the space, with soft shading and dark outlines. The composition wraps around the upper arm from the shoulder, and the colour is muted and natural.

Dust was still settling behind the council lorry when Mavis Orrin pulled onto the verge of the Dunmore flats road and got out to look. Three weeks of rain had done what nobody in the district had predicted. Pale pink wild roses stood in the drainage ditch, their petals soft as paper left in the sun, and beside them the lupins had come up in blue spikes as thick as a tide line.

Her brother Tom had sold the family plot in March and gone to Almería without saying a word about the boundary wall. She had driven out to check the fence posts he had promised to replace before he left. Instead she knelt in the gravel, pinched a feathery sprig of foliage from the bank, and pressed it between the pages of the ledger she kept in the glovebox, where the sums for the sheep had stopped being useful years ago.
A pickup slowed behind her. A young man with a sunburnt neck leaned out and asked whether the car had broken down. She said no, she was counting flowers. He laughed, said there were more at the next bend, yellow ones going over and orange poppies in the cuttings, and offered her a ride if she wanted one. She thanked him and kept counting: two roses for every post still standing, one lupin spike for every stone that had shifted, and the yellow blooms climbing the fence Tom had never fixed.
She drove home with the window down and a jam jar of roses wedged against the passenger seat. At the gate she stopped, got out, and left it open for the first time in years, so the wind off the flats could come through and find whatever else had decided to grow.
