Botanical flowers down a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A diptych of the same thigh tattoo shows a cluster of botanical flowers rising from the lower leg towards the upper thigh. A purple iris, pink bleeding hearts and two pink peony-like blooms sit among green leaves, with an orange poppy and a small blackberry sprig near the base. The outlines are dark and the petals are shaded with soft gradients, and the colours are muted and naturalistic.

Dear Tom,

The stationmaster has let me have the bed behind the waiting room, the one nobody wanted because the ground is nothing but clinker and old ballast. I dug it over on Sunday with a borrowed fork and found the bleeding hearts had come up again from the bulbs Mum put in the year you left, pink as ever and hanging off their stems like little lanterns.
The purple iris came up beside the water tank, which I take as a sign, and the peonies by the gate are already in bud though it's only April. The poppies are self-sown from the seed in Dad's tin. I've been on my knees every evening after the 6.14 has gone through, so the porter says I look like a pilgrim. Mr Okafor from the goods yard brought me a bramble cutting off the embankment fence, the one that fruited so badly last August, and told me it would take if I kept it wet.
I know you're going on the 6.14 on Monday, and I know you said you'd write from Leeds, and I'm not asking you to stay. I only wanted you to know there's a patch of colour where the coal heap used to be. If you come back at the end of the summer, there'll be blackberries on that fence, and you'll have to pick them with your sleeves pulled down because of the thorns.
Yours, as ever, Nell
P.S. The iris is not for picking. I mean it.
