Robin and roses on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A robin perches on a branch among green leaves, with two pink roses and a third rose partly visible on the left. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, with muted greens, pinks and a grey-blue bird with an orange breast. The design wraps diagonally up the outer thigh, with the person's hands and dark clothing framing the edges of the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, lad, before the kettle gives up on you. You'll not get a cup from the machine on Ward Nine tonight, so this will have to be the tea. Gerald Pask had the bed by the window the winter the robin came in. Nobody let birds in, mind, but the sash had a split in it, and a robin finds a split the way it finds everything, quick and cheeky.

Every night at ten past three it sat on the sill and sang at him. Not loud. Just enough. The sister wanted it shooed. Gerald said leave it, it's keeping the count. Keeping the count of what, I asked him, and he said the roses in the car park. There's a bed of old roses out there nobody has pruned since the seventies, pink and blowsy, and he'd spent forty years with the parks department before his chest gave out. He knew every one by name.

On the last night he asked me to open the sash a crack. The robin came down and sat on the blanket by his hand, bold as you like, and he said, there, that's my lot back. Then he went quiet with his eyes on the window, and when the bird flew off towards the roses he didn't follow it.

Next morning the roses in the car park were in full flower, out of season, every pale pink open at once. I've never told the sister that. Mind your tea.
