Botanical sprig tattoo down a back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph shows a woman's bare back, with her head turned away and one arm raised. A botanical tattoo of thin stems, open flowers and buds runs from the upper shoulder blade down towards the waist on the left side of the frame. The fine shaded linework is in grey tones against the soft, dimly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dora had been sent to the hedgerow behind the church at seven with kitchen scissors and orders to bring back something that looked grown by accident. Her aunt Frances was doing the flowers for the Pryce wedding and had decided the florist's peonies were too pleased with themselves.

The hedge was thick with old man's beard gone silver, knapweed with hard purple buttons, and wild clematis that had climbed the lychgate then lost interest. Dora cut stems as thin as shoelaces and laid them on a tea towel on the wall. Dew soaked through her jumper. Frances said nothing about the dew, which told Dora she had been right to bring a spare cardigan.

By nine the stems were in the van, wrapped in wet newspaper. The bride, Kathryn Pryce, arrived at the marquee in trainers, carrying her shoes, and studied the bundle as if it might be a trick. She chose one sprig with a closed bud at its tip and asked whether it could go in her own buttonhole instead of the tables.

Frances agreed, which surprised Dora more than anything. "Some things are for one person," she said, and pinned the bud to the bride's sash. The rest went into jars along the trestles, each stem bending the way it pleased. Nobody mentioned the flowers during the speeches, but the room smelled faintly of cut grass and rain, and Dora decided that was compliment enough.
