Single rose on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small rose sits at the top of a long, thin stem with three dark leaves, all rendered in fine black linework with some soft shading. The tattoo is placed on the side of the ribcage and fills a narrow vertical area of the frame. The photograph is black and white, with soft lighting that falls across the skin and leaves the background plain.

Dear Ivy,

The florist in Hexham sent the wrong order this morning, and I am writing this at the kitchen table with my hands still smelling of cut green. Two hundred stems were meant to go into the church, a rose for every pew end, and instead the van brought one crate of long-stemmed roses with their thorns stripped and their leaves left on for the bunches. Mr Abernethy swore on his mother's Bible that he had written half a dozen. I have no quarrel with him. I have a quarrel with the weather, which has turned and will not let me sleep.
We spent the afternoon at the vicarage stripping leaves by lamplight, and I kept one stem back for myself. It is the kind with a single bud at the top, dark as a bruise in the lamp, and three leaves low down where the stem is thinnest. Dorothy from the altar guild caught me holding it up to the window and said I looked like a girl choosing a fish. I told her I was measuring it against the light.
Tomorrow the bride walks up the aisle with an armful of what we have, and nobody will notice the one stem that is missing its place. I have put it in a jam jar on the windowsill, where the glass throws its shadow across the table like a line drawn in pencil. When you come home at Easter, you will know which one it is.
Love, Maud
