Branch tattoo across a bare back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A monochrome photograph taken from behind shows a person with short curly hair, one hand resting on the shoulder and another on the side of the waist. Fine black linework forms bare branches with clusters of small berries or seed heads across the back. The dark, plain background and soft studio lighting focus attention on the design and the smooth skin.

The wind on Hollin Pass has teeth by October, and you learn to walk with your collar up and your eyes on the scree. Your aunt Maud sent you up for the last of the seed heads, the grey-stemmed umbellifers that grow only where the drystone walls give out. She wrote the names on a card in pencil: hogweed, angelica, the bramble canes that bend like wire. Bring them back dry, she said, or don't bring them back at all.

By the cairn at the top the light goes thin and yellow. A man from the Ellery farm is already there, sitting on an upturned crate with a flask, watching a crow work at something in the dead thorn. He doesn't ask what you're doing. He tells you the old story about the pass: that every winter the birches shed their twigs onto the path so travellers can find the way down in snow, and that you should never take a berry you haven't been given. You laugh. He doesn't.
You strip the stems anyway, carefully, one head at a time, into the paper bag. The seeds rattle against the paper like sleet. When you look up the crow has gone and the thorn has a new cluster of berries, scarlet against the black, that you could swear was not there before. The man has gone too, but the flask sits on the crate, still warm.
You know what Maud will say. She will tip the bag onto the kitchen table, sort the heads by the window light, and tell you that you have brought back the whole winter of the pass, one small dry handful at a time. Then she will make you a cup of tea and ask, very casually, which way you came down.
