Botanical sprig with flower buds on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a single thin stem with three flower buds, several small leaves and a larger open bloom near the base, all drawn in black. The linework is fine and even, with stippled dotwork shading on the petals and leaves. The design is centred on the outer ankle and lower leg against plain skin, with a dark padded surface visible behind.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the cat, he's been sick in my slipper twice. Your great-grandfather grew sweet peas up the back wall of the allotment on Quay Lane, where the clay is so stubborn it bends a spade. Every August he took a single stem down to the harbour show in a jam jar, and every August Mr Tolley from the chandlery told him one stem was no entry at all.

The year the wind tore the sail off the Fair Maid over the Bar, he cut the best stem he had. Three buds at the top, a bloom open at the foot, leaves no bigger than a thumbnail. He wrapped it in wet newspaper and walked it down the harbour wall with the tide coming over his boots. Nobody had come to the show for prizes that year. They had come to stare at the empty moorings.

He never set the jar on the judges' table. He walked straight past them and left it on the step of Ada Pell's front door, because her son was still out beyond the Ness and she hadn't opened her curtains in a week. By morning the jar was gone from the step. Ada had pressed the bloom flat between the pages of the tide tables, and beside it she had written in pencil: it came in on the Thursday tide. Your great-grandfather never did learn whether she meant the boat or the flower. Mind the cat.
