Small flowers on a constellation line, ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of red, orange, pink and purple flowers with green leaves, joined by a fine black line of dots like a star map. The linework is delicate and the flowers are filled with flat colour, with a few light yellow buds at the lower left. The tattoo sits on the inner ankle against a dark background, with the photo cropped to show only the leg and foot.

Dear Tom, the seed merchant in Ludlow sent the wrong packets again, so I have sown what I had: sweet william, a red rose cutting from the south wall, two orange calendulas and a purple aster that came up on its own by the damson tree.

I laid them out the way your grandfather used to lay out his star charts on the kitchen table, with a ball of garden twine and a bent nail. Each flower sits on a point where he had marked a star, and the twine runs from peg to peg between them. He called the shape the Hare, though I have never once seen a hare in it. Last night I walked it in the dark with the torch and felt a fool, but the pattern held even in the wet grass.

The yellow buds at the bottom are the ones that worry me. Pippa from next door says they won't open before the first frost, and she may well be right, but I left them where they are. There was a gap at the corner where the line bends, and something had to fill it.

Come at the end of August if you can. The windfalls will be on the grass and the leaves will be turning at their edges, and you can see the whole shape from the top of the ladder. Bring the old chart with the coffee ring on it. I want to check his join against the sky before the light goes, and I would like you to hold the other end of the twine.
