Bow and arrow within circles on the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a bow and arrow sits inside a set of thin overlapping circles and a triangle, centred on the chest. The linework is delicate and fine, with some dotted accents and a bolder stroke along the bow. The ink is solid black and grey on pale skin, and the composition is symmetrical around the centre of the chest.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mother Ysolde kept the level crossing at Halden Bridge, and every evening she drew the same figure in the chalk dust of the signal box floor: a ring, then a second ring pushed off its centre, then a third, until the circles tangled like wet rope. She drew a triangle through them. Then she drew a bow across the middle, because her grandfather had told her the bow was the only thing that could make a straight line out of a curve.

Her son Piers asked why the arrow never flew out of the circles. She said the circles were the track and the arrow was the train, and a train that left its track was only a noise in the fields. Nobody in the valley believed her, but the 9:40 from the north always ran true on the days she had drawn the figure.

One winter the points froze, and the 9:40 came down the line with nobody at the lever. Piers, twelve years old, ran to the box and found the chalk figure smeared to nothing under his boots. He knelt and drew it again with his thumb, the bow first, then the arrow, then every circle, dotting small stars where the lines crossed. The points shifted under his hand with a groan of iron. The train rolled through the crossing on the right rail, and the driver lifted two fingers from his window as he passed.

Piers kept the box after her. Old signalmen still say the chalk marks never quite wash out of the boards, and that a bow is always pointing north, with the arrow held inside its circle.
