Overlapping geometric shapes across a back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo covers the upper back, showing overlapping squares rotated at different angles, several circles and a dense set of thin lines radiating from a central point. The linework is black and varies in weight, with some strokes sketched lightly and others drawn bolder. The design is shown in black ink on pale skin against a blurred indoor background.

Mind the ice on that step, it has had your grandfather on his backside more than once. Sit close to the range and I'll tell you about the Pryce brothers and the square field behind the chapel, the one nobody could agree on, because it was the winter old Eli Tancred came up the lane with his chain, his three brass squares and a face like a closed gate.

Their father had died owing the land to nobody and everybody. Gideon said the boundary ran from the ash to the bend in the stream. Amos swore it ran from the ash to the standing stone, which was a good twenty yards further into his brother's oats. Eli heard them out across the kitchen table, drank their tea, and asked for a hammer and a ball of string. Then he walked out into the snow and drove a stake into the frozen middle of the field. He would not say why until he had tied a line to it and swung the chain round in a full circle.
Then he drew. He scratched squares into the frost with a stick, turned each one a little further than the last, and where the corners met the circle he drove another stake. By dusk there was a whole shape laid out in the snow, with lines running from the centre like the spokes of a cartwheel. Gideon began to weep, though he would never own to it. The stakes, Eli said, did not care which of them was the elder. They had been set by the same measure that sets the stars, and that measure put the boundary through the middle, where every line crossed, which meant the two of them had been standing on each other's half for thirty years.
Next morning the snow had come down thick and filled every line. Amos and Gideon walked out together carrying one shovel, and neither could say afterwards which of them had started digging first.
