Boxer dog head and heart on a limb

Other · Mixed · Photo

A boxer dog's head in profile fills the centre of the tattoo, with a red heart pierced by an arrow above it and a thin black swirling vine curling beneath. The dog is built from bold black outlines, loose brushstroke shading and flat orange, grey and white areas. The composition runs vertically along the limb and the vine tapers off towards the bottom of the frame.

Dougal the boxer had been waiting outside the late chip shop on Carver Street since half past nine, which was how Maisie Okonkwo knew where to find her brother's dog when the rain came in off the river. She found him sitting under the awning with his square head turned toward the bus lane, as if he expected someone to step off the 43 with a bag of offcuts and an apology.

Her brother Tomasz had gone to ground after the bet at the Lamplighter went wrong. Nobody in the Lamplighter would say how wrong. The landlady had pinned a red paper heart to the corkboard behind the bar, an arrow driven through it, a joke from a regular who painted signs for the pier, and nobody had thought to take it down. Maisie unhooked the lead from the railing and tucked the envelope of cash deeper inside her coat.

They walked the long way, past the shuttered bingo hall and the scaffolding that had stood since spring, the dog pulling toward every bin that smelled of vinegar. At the old tram depot Dougal stopped and would not move. Through a gap in the roller shutter a single bulb burned over a workbench, and Tomasz sat beneath it with his head in his hands and a pencil behind his ear.

She did not say anything. She sat on the kerb beside him and let the dog lean his whole weight against both of them, and after a while Tomasz laughed, a short ugly sound, and took the envelope without opening it. "Tell Harry I'll pay him Friday," he said. The dog sighed and lay down across their feet, and the rain thinned to nothing above the depot roof.
