Darth Vader helmet on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a Darth Vader helmet in profile, shown in side view with the visor and helmet edges picked out in fine white highlights. The shading is smooth and high contrast, moving from deep black to light grey across the metal surfaces. A dark swirling texture fills the lower part of the forearm behind the helmet, and a dark sleeve and a blurred bench appear in the background.

Dear Mags,

You'll laugh, but the lad in bed six asked me for a pen last night and drew a helmet on the back of his tea menu. Nine years old, wrist in plaster from a trampoline mishap, and he wanted it right. He kept saying the visor has to look like it's watching you, not blank like a bin lid. I told him Darth Vader doesn't need a face to be frightening, and he said that's exactly what his dad says about the boiler.
The ward goes quiet after midnight. Just the drip pumps clicking and the lift at the end of the corridor going up and down for nobody. I do my rounds with the torch turned low, and I've got into the habit of stopping at the window by the stairwell, where the car park lights turn everything grey. Last week rain ran down that glass in a slow spiral toward the drain, and I thought of the black swirl he'd shaded under his helmet. He said it was the bit of the galaxy you can't see from the ground.
So I've bought him a proper ballpoint from the chemist by the bus station, the good kind with the click, not the chewed one from the nurses' desk. I paid for it myself, which you can tell Dave is the first sensible thing I've done all year.
The sky's going the colour of the paper he draws on, not quite light yet. I'll post this on the way home. Give the kids a kiss from me, and don't let Dave near the boiler.
Love, Stan
