Braided woman with an eye, flowers and a goat

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A woman with braided hair stands centrally, holding a goat-like animal in her arms, with braided rope trailing from its body. Above her head, a single eye sits within a stippled sunburst, and clusters of flowers and leaves frame her shoulders. The image uses fine linework, dense dot shading and solid black areas, all in black ink on white.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marit's mother plaited her hair so tight the girl could feel the morning in her scalp, then tied the far end of a long rope to the goat's collar. Hesper was the only goat in the valley that never bolted, and the village had a rule about her: nothing that grazed could cross the mill race after dark. Marit had never believed the rule, which was why she was walking the goat through the wild peony meadow with the sun already sliding down behind the hill.

The sun went down that evening as a single yellow eye sitting in a ring of bright needles, and the miller's wife said it watched for lies. Marit had told three of them that week, one about the milk and two about the bread. The rope trailed behind her through the grass, coiling like a second animal that wanted to be elsewhere, and the flowers brushed her shoulders with petals the colour of old candle wax.

At the mill race the water ran black and the great wheel had stopped turning. A man in a grey coat stood on the sluice gate with a pair of iron shears, and he did not look surprised to see her. He said the rope could be cut and the goat would find her own way up the hill, and that the cutting was a thing a girl had to do with her own hands. Marit held the shears for a long time. Then she closed them.

Hesper bolted up the slope without a sound. The rope lay on the wet stones and began to unwind into threads of grey smoke, and the eye above the hill shut like a door. Next morning the goat was waiting at the gate, and round her neck was a fresh length of rope, braided tighter than any mother had managed, knotted twice around Marit's own wrist.
