Alice and the Cheshire cat tattoo design

Black and grey · Flash

A pen and ink drawing of a girl with long flowing hair, shown alongside a Cheshire cat whose grinning face and striped tail wrap around her. A small label reading drink me, a bottle, and a scatter of hearts sit within the composition. The work uses dense hatching and bold outlines in dark ink on a plain white background, with no colour.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Gate for three days when Nell Varley found the bottle behind the cask in the cellar, its paper label curling at the corners, two words in a schoolroom hand: 'DRINK ME'.

Mrs Pascoe, who kept the inn with a ledger and a sharp tongue, told her to leave it be. 'That one was put by for a girl who asked too many questions,' she said, not looking up from the bread. Upstairs, a grin hung in the rafters of the taproom, a face with no body to go with it, and the stranded carters pretended not to see it. Nell had been asking questions since the coach slid off the pass.

She carried the bottle to the window where the lamp turned the glass gold. The liquid inside was dark and smelled of honey and pepper. She drew the cork and drank one mouthful. The room did not swell or shrink. Instead the hearth fire leaned sideways, the frost hearts on the panes began to run, and a striped tail uncoiled from the bannister and tapped her shoulder. 'You'd best be quick about it, the road's opening,' said the cat, and it was gone before she could turn.

At dawn the lane was clear, the ploughed snow banked in neat white hearts along the verge. Mrs Pascoe counted the coaches, then the glasses, and found the cellar bottle back on its shelf, empty, with a fresh label. It read, in Nell's hand, 'DRINK ME AGAIN'.
