Black and grey dotwork and linework flash design of a long-haired woman beneath a horned bison head with flames, with no body placement shown.

Woman and horned bison design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A long-haired woman with her hands raised to the horns of a bison head that rises above her, with flame shapes curling up from the top of the head. The design uses fine linework and dense dotwork stippling for the fur, hair and shading, with sparse orbs and trailing vines filling the background. It is drawn in black ink on a pale off-white background with no colour.

Dear Tomas, the wagon came off the A9 at dusk with one wheel singing, and Mr Varga swore the bison had kicked the axle loose at the last lay-by. I have told him it was the stone he picked up in Carlisle. Either way the fair is three days behind and the posters are still rolled under my cot.

The bison is still the best thing we own. It stands at the back of the tent on its plinth of crates, the great shaggy head with horns that curl like the moon's own arms, and the flames painted on its crown that Mr Varga insists are lit from inside. Last night, after the last booth closed, I sat with it and asked what it wanted for the season. Nothing, I think it said, though the old woman from the Lincolnshire fens, who comes for her fortune every summer, says that is how the bargains always start.

She came today, before the rain. She put her hands on the horns the way you would hold a dog's ears and told me the animal had once been a drover who sold his own herd to the river for a winter's bread. I did not believe her until the sun broke through the canvas in one long white bar and every glass orb on the tent pole lit at once.

She paid in silver, six old pennies and a brass button. Come home before the bison tires of waiting for you. Your sister, Ilse.
