Blackwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A central design shows a brain resting on a monitor with a grid-patterned face, above a keyboard and a round disc. Partial designs, including a figure in goggles, run along the edges of the forearm. The solid black linework is filled with patterned and dotted texture, with a small area of green ink on the lower right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth Halloran had kept the old monitor in the milking parlour since her father's day, on a shelf above the teat-dip where the steam couldn't reach it. By the first hard frost of January it was the only thing on the farm that still ran warm. Its screen showed a grid of square faces, one for each cow in the herd, and the faces had been getting quieter all week.

"It's the cold," said Tomasz, the relief milker, wiping his hands on his overalls. He leaned over the keyboard and tapped the space bar twice. The grid flickered. Somewhere under the floor the pump kicked in. "Your machine's full of frost, that's all," he said, and Ruth thought he meant the monitor, though he might have meant himself.

She had bought it from a clearance sale in Shrewsbury the year the vet said the herd had fallen off their feed. The manual said nothing about cows. It said to keep the drive clean and never to hold the power button for longer than a breath. She had not understood the round black disc until the night she found it in the feed bin, turning slowly, and understood it had been counting the animals while the grey wrinkled thing on the screen dreamt up their rations.

At dawn she took the disc out and held it to the window. The light came through in rings, and in every ring a single cow looked back at her, blinking in square lines, unhurried. Ruth put the kettle on and didn't go out to the field for an hour.
