The aquarium had been closed since eleven, but Inspector Maud Harrower still had a key to the side door of the Thames Wharf exhibition hall, and she let herself in with the torch in her teeth. The night security man had been found in the plant room with his pockets turned out. Nobody had touched the tanks. That was the first wrong thing.

The jellyfish gallery glowed blue under the emergency lights, a long corridor of acrylic columns with lanterns of pale light hanging inside them. Harrower walked slowly past the moon jellies and the box jellies until she reached the big tank at the end, where the water was black and still. One specimen hung against the glass, a bell the size of a dinner plate, its trailing tentacles lifting and falling as if it were breathing. Someone had written a catalogue number on a card taped to the glass. The card was dated last Tuesday. The fish had been moved here from a holding tank that morning, according to the log, and the log was in the handwriting of a man who had been dead for three years.
She pressed her palm to the cold acrylic. The jellyfish drifted up to meet her hand and then, without any reason she could name, turned and sank towards the floor of the tank, where a single dotted line of light ran out across the sand like a fuse. Harrower followed it with the torch. It ended at a grate beneath the viewing bench, and under the grate, wedged in the drain, was a ring of brass keys tied with blue thread. She knew the thread. She had sent a man to prison for the same knot.
