Seedling and potting stages on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical sequence of four stacked motifs: a seedling with roots surrounded by a ring of dots, a stippled block of soil, a patterned clay pot, and a shallow saucer at the base. The linework is crisp, and the soil and pot are shaded with dense stipple and hatching that gives them depth. The tattoo is entirely black and grey on a light skin tone, centred on the forearm against a plain background.

The saucer is the first thing Mrs Pruett hands you on the morning you arrive, before the key and before the rules about the bath. It is chipped at one rim and full of rainwater from the night's squall, and she tells you to mind it on the stairs, because the geranium on the landing has been waiting three weeks for someone to notice it is thirsty.

The boarding house at Thornmere Cove has nine rooms and one plant that matters, a lemon in a glazed pot on the sill of the back kitchen. Mrs Pruett claims she raised it from a pip she found in a fishmonger's bin in 1971. You doubt it. You doubt most things she says, but you water it anyway, because she watches from the scullery door with her arms folded until you do.
Early in the week the wind drops and the sea goes flat as a plate. You carry the pot out to the yard to let the sun reach it. The soil is dark and crumbled, and when you tip the pot a little the roots show, pale and clinging, shaped like a hand that has forgotten what it was reaching for. Mrs Pruett comes out with two cups of tea and sees you looking.
"Every spring I move it up a size," she says. "Every spring it sulks. Then it doesn't."
You think about that all afternoon, up on the cliff path, watching the gulls turn over the harbour. When you get back the lemon has a new leaf, small and bright, unfolding like something that had decided to take a chance. You don't say anything. Neither does she, but that evening the saucer is full on the sill, waiting for you to find it.
