Branching tree and animal silhouette on a calf

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A tall tree with fine, branching black linework climbs up the outer calf, with its roots fading out towards the lower leg. A small solid black silhouette of an animal sits on the ground line just above the ankle. The tattoo is in black ink only, shown against pale skin, a patterned upholstered sofa and a carpeted floor in a bright, sunlit room.

Sit yourself down on that upturned crate and mind the wasps, they've found the windfalls again. You want the tale of Old Tamsin's tree, or the hare? They came together, so you'll have both whether you like it or not. The sapling went into the top corner of the Hollins orchard the August her husband took the boat over to Ireland, and everyone said a thing planted in grief grows crooked. It did. Every branch leaned out towards the lane, as though it were waiting for a cart that might come round the bend with news.

The hare arrived the second summer. Nobody saw it come. One evening it was simply sitting at the edge of the roots where the grass gave up, ears flat, facing the lane, and it came back every evening after that, the way a clock comes back to the same hour. Tamsin took to bringing her tea out and sitting beside it. She never once heard it make a sound, and she never once saw it look away from the lane.

Then one evening in late August the hare got up, shook itself, and loped down between the rows of trees without a backward glance. Tamsin stood up too quickly and her tea went over her boots. Down at the gate a boy was waving a letter, shouting that the ferry had docked, and the pears on the crooked tree were so heavy that the lowest branch had touched the ground. Tamsin always said the hare had known the cart was not the thing to watch for. It had only been keeping the lane clear for her until somebody worth the walk came up it.
