Swirling tree tattoo on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of a stylised tree with curling branches, vines and small leaves sits across the calf. The linework is bold and even, with the open canopy formed from loops and spirals. The image is a close crop of a leg resting on a pale cloth, and the tattoo is the clear focus.

Pull your chairs in close and mind the kettle, the pair of you, for this is a long one and the wind never likes a short tale. You'll have passed the old tree on the cliff path coming up. Nobody planted it. It came up out of the rock the spring after the Marguerite broke on the Skerry, and it grew the way a thing grows when it has a grievance to work out, curling back on itself and throwing out shoots where no shoot had any business to be.

Nell Harrow was the keeper's girl then, twelve years old and afraid of nothing but her father's temper and the dark at the top of the tower. Her father trimmed the wick every evening and sent her up the iron stair with the oil can. The tree had grown right up against the lamp house wall by then, its vines threaded through the railings, its small leaves turning silver whenever the beam swept past. Nell said the loops went round in the same order as the tide, in and out, in and out, and she could tell the hour by counting them.

Then came the night the fog sat down on the headland like a wet dog and would not shift. Her father's boat was out past the Skerry with the Pennick brothers, and the light was failing. Nell tied a length of twine to the trunk and felt her way down the cliff path, one curl of vine at a time, counting the spirals under her palm until the ground levelled out. She was back at the lamp before the fog thinned, and the boats came in by her light.

So when you see a green loop going round and round on somebody's leg, you'll know it's a rescue of sorts. Keep one hand on the rail and count the turns, and the tree will mind the rest.
