Lotus outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on a beige upholstered cushion, with a small lotus flower tattoo on the outer ankle. The lotus is drawn in thin, unshaded black linework with a simple centre and layered petals, and a faint dotted triangle sits just below it. The ink is all black and the soft indoor light and white furniture in the background keep the focus on the ankle.

The lift stuck between the third and fourth floors at ten past three, and Agnes Pryce kept her thumb on the alarm while the night porter, Dev, hummed the same three bars of something from the radio. "Engineer said forty minutes at midnight," he said. "Forty minutes is a lot of ward to miss."

Agnes had a pad of drug charts on her knee and a biro that refused to write. Without thinking, she had been drawing in the margin: a flower with pointed petals opening out from a small centre, like a cupped hand. Dev leaned over to look. "That's the one from the carpet shop on Mill Lane." "My mother drew it on my school bag," she said. Beneath it she had ruled a faint dotted triangle, the way her mother used to mark where the stitching should sit.

The lift lurched and settled. They took the stairs to Ward 7 with the pad under her arm. The man in bed nine had been awake since two, asking the time every ten minutes, and when she showed him the drawing he laughed and said the petals looked like the bottom of a rowing boat. She tore the sheet out and gave it to him anyway.

At six, grey light crept through the blinds. Agnes found the drawing folded under his water jug, the black lines still clean, the dotted triangle pointing at nothing in particular. His wife arrived at seven with a flask and a carrier bag of clean pyjamas. She unfolded the paper, smoothed it flat against her coat, and said it looked like it was about to open.
