Brave script with arrow on wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the word Brave written in flowing black script across the inner wrist, with a thin arrow running underneath and through the lower letters. The linework is clean and fine, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin is shown against a dark fabric background, which makes the lettering stand out clearly.

Mab Corrigan was sent up to the high pasture the week before Candlemas, because the youngest ewe had got through the hedge and no grown man on the place could be spared from the threshing. Snow had come in the night and lay to the knee. She took the crook, a heel of bread, and the dog that had no name because it would not answer to one.

She found the ewe at the stone wall above the beck, its back legs folded under it and its breath smoking. Beyond the wall the moor ran white to a sky the colour of pewter. The old shepherd had once told her that a lamb could be carried home by anyone who did not stop to look back, so she did not look back. She knelt in the drift, got her arms under the ewe, and began to climb.
By dusk the bread was gone and her fingers had stopped answering. The dog ran ahead and came back, ran ahead and came back, always holding its tail straight out and its nose set on the same line, like a bolt fired from a bow. At the gate she saw the lamp in the kitchen window and understood that someone had been standing at it all afternoon.
Her father said nothing when she came in with the ewe across her shoulders. He only lifted the lamb from under the wet coat and set it by the range, then looked at her for a long while and said the one word, quietly, as if it cost him something to find it. The dog lay down with its nose on the hearth and did not move again until spring.
