Small BRAVE lettering on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small tattoo reading BRAVE in upright serif capitals, set on the outer thigh. The lettering is crisp, solid black ink with a clean, even edge and no visible shading. The skin tone and soft neutral background keep the focus on the single word, with the wearer's hand and clothing framing the lower left of the image.

Most people gave her something sensible. Bread. Salt. The word for home in their mother's tongue. Agnete wrote each one on a slate and hung it from the post, and the slates went grey in the wet and she wiped them with her sleeve.
One October a boy came up the track with a sack on his back and a limp he tried to hide. He had no word ready. He stood at the stone and looked at the slates and said he did not know what to give. Agnete told him that was no answer, and the wind came over the ridge and rattled the slates against the post like teeth.
He said the only word he had was the one his mother shouted at him from the gate when he left. She had not said it kindly. She had said it like a dare. Agnete asked him to spell it, and he did, letter by letter, in plain capitals, the way the schoolmaster made the children write on the church wall. Agnete copied it onto a clean slate and hung it up, and the wind dropped. Nobody ever asked her what it meant to the boy, and she never said. But when the rain came that winter, it was the one slate on the post that never blurred.
