Breathe lettering on an inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is held palm up in soft focus against a pale background, with the wrist turned toward the camera. The word breathe, followed by a full stop, is tattooed across the inner wrist in a typewriter-style typeface in dark ink. The image is in greyscale-toned natural light, with the lettering as the clear focal point.

Sit down, sit down, you'll want the chair by the radiator, the lift's been out since Michaelmas and the stairs take it out of a body. Fourteen floors, Carrow House, and on the fourteenth lived Mrs Ivy Pargeter with her typewriter, an Imperial she'd bought off a solicitor's clerk in 1961 for four pounds and a bottle of Cinzano.

Every Thursday she typed the complaints for the whole block. Damp in the stairwell, the boiler man who never came, the lad in flat nine who played the trumpet at three in the morning. She typed them in capitals where it mattered and never once spelled council wrong. The council wrote back to her, because a letter from Carrow House typed that neat was hard to lose in a drawer.
One February the power went off for nine days and the lift stayed dead, and a young man came up the stairs one evening with a sheet of paper shaking in his hand. His mother was on the ninth floor, she couldn't get her breath, and the doctor's number had gone to the bad line. Ivy didn't type anything that night. She sat him down, made him say the thing back to her slowly, one word at a time, and set her own hand flat on the table so he could watch the rise and fall of it.
When they pulled the block down, the men found the Imperial in a cupboard with a single sheet still in the roller. The only word on it was the one she'd typed for the lad, and the full stop after it had hit so hard the paper tore. Breathe. Mind the stairs going down, love.
