Small cursive lettering on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small tattoo of two cursive letters on the inner wrist, with the hand raised above the arm. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The image is black and white, and the dark jacket sleeve frames the lower edge while blurred shoes and legs sit softly out of focus behind.

Dear Hettie, the boat came in on Tuesday without Tom aboard, and the men at the slipway would not look at me while they unloaded the nets. I have taken the blue cup down from the dresser and put it back twice. You always said I fussed. Mr Pryce from the chandlery has offered to carry the coal up the cliff path for nothing, which means he wants something, and I have decided I would rather be cold.

The lamp at Carrick Head was lit by six this evening, as it has been every night since your uncle built the tower with his own hands. I climbed the iron stairs with the oil can, counting the rungs the way Tom taught me, and at the top I found the glass sweated over and a gull dead on the gallery rail. I wiped it clean with my apron and I did not cry, though I want you to know that I wanted to.
There is a thing I found in his coat pocket that I cannot make sense of. A scrap of paper, torn at one edge, with two letters inked in that looping hand of his, l and e, joined at the top like a bird landing on a wire. Nothing after them. I have turned it over and held it to the lamp, half expecting the rest of the word to show through, but it never does. Perhaps he began to write something to me and thought better of it. Perhaps it was a name.
I have pinned it above the stove where I can see it. Every morning I say the letters aloud, as if they were a word that might finish itself if I am patient enough. Write soon, and tell me what you think it means. Your loving sister, Ann.
