You have been carrying the envelope up fourteen floors since Tuesday, because the lift at Harrow Court has been out again and the stairwell light buzzes like something trapped. Inside is a letter from the council about the transfer list, two lines long, asking whether you would consider Kirkby Lane, a ground-floor flat with a garden the size of a bath mat. Someone has written in biro on the back: ask Mrs Adeyemi, she knows the man at housing.

On the fourth landing a boy is kicking a football against a fire door, slowly, as though he has been told not to and is counting each thud. You stop to let him finish. He asks if you are moving out. You say you do not know yet. He tells you that is what his mum says about her boyfriend, then he kicks the ball into the dark of the stairwell and runs after it without waiting for an answer.

At the top you lean on the balcony rail and look down at the car park, where the sodium lamps are coming on one at a time, unsure of themselves. Below, Mrs Adeyemi is pegging out sheets in the wind. She sees you and holds up one hand, a question with fingers.

You lift your own hand and let it hang there. Not yes, not no. You fold the letter into your coat pocket, and it is the first decision you have made all week that does not need to be made yet.
