Right, sit down, and mind the dog, he's no good for stories. You'll want the one about Joss Penhale and the wave off the Skerry, because everyone on Inish Vara knows it and nobody tells it right.

Joss was twelve, and his mother had sent him across the sound at low tide for paraffin. He was halfway back when the squall came off the Atlantic faster than any gull could fly. The sea got up under him like a bullock rising out of a ditch, and he went under the first wave with his mouth full of cold.

Old Nan Keir was on the slipway with her shawl over her head. She didn't shout for help. She shouted, 'Wait for it, boy. Wait for the water to finish. Then breathe.' He couldn't have heard her over that wind, but he always said he did, the way you hear your own name in a dream. So he let the wave take him up and roll on past, and when his feet found sand he drew in one long breath and came up coughing on the shingle, the paraffin can still clutched in his fist.

That's why, on the lintel of the old boathouse, someone painted that word in black, with a wave curling in front of it, so every fisherman going out would remember to wait before he gasped. The paint's near gone now. But the sea still comes in the same way, and so do we.
