Bride of Frankenstein pin-up flash

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

The design shows a pin-up figure with green skin, a black and white bouffant hairstyle and bandages wrapped around her arm and torso, holding a small voodoo doll with pins. Below her sit a skull, two purple roses, a heart with a cream bow and a banner reading Electric Lovin', set against a black background with bats and vines. Bold dark outlines, smooth shading and glowing teal highlights give it a vivid, colour-led finish.

The ovens at Marrow and Daughter wake before the birds, and you are the one who wakes them. At four o'clock you pull the lever, feel a click run up your arm like static off a wet coat, and watch the blue pilot lights bloom behind the glass. Strips of muslin hang from the proving racks where Nell left them, twisted the way she wraps her own wrists when the ovens bite. Nobody on Wexford Lane has ever seen Nell without her hair piled high in that black and white bouffant, and nobody has asked why.

The starter in the cellar has been gurgling again, rising to a pitch that sounds almost like a name. Nell says it is only the yeast, but she keeps a small dough man on the shelf above it, stuck through with cloves, and she won't say who it's meant to be. Tonight there is a note propped against the flour bin in her looping hand: Rolls shaped by five. Heart loaves for Mrs Okafor's order. Electric lovin', underlined twice, as if you might argue.

At half five the heart loaves come out of the oven with a cream ribbon of crust tied round their middles, glossy and split on top as though they have been waiting for the right moment. You set them on the cooling rack, and the teal glow from the lamp slides over them. Mr Sayer from the hardware shop pushes in before six, taps a crust as if it were a melon, and asks whether the bread is fresh. You tell him it was struck into life an hour ago. He laughs, and buys two.
