Pin-up with roses holding a teacup

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A stylised woman with a curled black updo, three yellow and pink roses in her hair and a winking expression holds a teacup and saucer. Her skin and dress are rendered in greys with bold black shading, while the roses, leaf details, heart earrings and a green and pink ornament on her arm add colour. The figure is centred on a cream, stained paper background with a black border and the script words oh dang above her head.

Tuesday, and the damp stain over table four has spread again, shaped now like a map of somewhere nobody wants to visit. Mr Pargeter came in at half past nine, as he has every Tuesday since the rain started, and took the chair facing the window so he could watch the bus shelter. I brought him Earl Grey in the good cup, the one with the chip under the handle that nobody else is allowed to touch. He sniffed it, gave me the wink he uses instead of thank you, and mouthed oh dang, which is the only slang he owns, picked up from his grandson's comics. I had to go out the back and laugh into the flour sacks.

The bell rang and Ada Finch came in with three yellow roses pinned in her hair, though it was not Sunday and nobody had asked her anywhere. She sat at table four, under the stain, and ordered a pot for two without looking at the menu. Mr Pargeter set his cup down very carefully, the way you put down something that might roll off the edge of the world.

He said the number nine had been late again, and she said she had noticed, because she had been on it every morning for four years and had never once seen him get off at the stop he pretended was his. He turned the saucer in a slow circle and admitted he had been riding it too, to the end of the line and back, just to be near the window. She laughed so hard the spoons jumped. I poured the tea and they both reached for the chipped cup at once.

When I wiped the table later, the stain on the ceiling had shifted in the lamplight and looked, for once, like a heart with a crack down the middle. I left it there.
