Neo-traditional flash design of a pin-up styled Snow White figure with a red bow, framed by a rope border, red roses and a banner reading waiting for true love's kiss.

Pin-up Snow White with banners and roses

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A pin-up styled female character with black curled hair, a red hair bow and a dark strapless top rests one hand on her cheek while the other arm is raised above her head. She sits within an oval rope frame, with a ribbon banner across the top and a second banner curving along the bottom, both lettered with the words waiting for true love's kiss. Red roses with green leaves and stems fill the lower corners, and the figure is shaded in warm skin tones with bold dark outlines against a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every September the Pellow Bay fair set up on the sea wall, and every September the painted lady in the old kissing booth had her lipstick touched up by Nell Darrow, who ran the candy floss stall next door. Nobody paid a shilling to see her any more. Nell did it anyway, leaning over the rope with a pot of cherry-red paint and a brush worn down to a whisker, humming the same tune she had hummed for forty years.

The banners above the lady had been lettered by a sign-writer called Oswin Pratt, who painted WAITING across the top and then drowned off the breakwater before he could finish the rest. The lady's black curls were still perfect. Her red bow had never once come unstuck, and the raised hand she held over her head still looked as if she were hailing someone on the far side of the bay.

One August a boy called Tobias Finch, with a fistful of coins from selling crabs, pushed through the crowd and slapped his money on the counter. "Does it work?" he asked. "The kiss. Does she wake?"

Nell wiped her brush on her apron. "She's not asleep, love. She's been wide awake since 1952, looking at the same bit of sea. A kiss won't get her off that frame." She nodded at the glass. "Ask her what she wants first."

Tobias stared at the lady for a long time. Then he leaned in and pressed his mouth to the cold glass, and the bottom ribbon, the one that spelled KISS in faded gold, lifted at one corner and curled away into the tide. The lady's raised hand dropped slowly to point at the water, and Nell, humming, went back to her candy floss.
