Leila had raised it from a cub, hand-fed through the bars and combed its flank each dawn with a comb of carved bone. When the showman's contract was read aloud, she stood by the pool with her circlet pushed back into her hair and said nothing, because the vizier had already promised the gold to the treasury before anyone had thought to ask her.

That night she went to the showman's tent with the circlet in her palm, the sapphire dark in the lamplight. "Take this instead," she said. "Keep the tiger's papers and keep the gold." He laughed, then saw the stones were real and stopped laughing. At dawn she opened the cage herself. The tiger stepped past the showman's boots and the guards who had come with torches, then walked back through the palace gate as if it had been expecting her all along.

That autumn the lotus bloomed twice on the river, and the boatmen swore they saw a striped shape on the north bank, sleek as a banner and twice as bright. Leila kept the bone comb on her dressing table and never once wore the circlet again.
