British Isles treasure map across a back

Traditional · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large shaded map of the British Isles covers the back, with Ireland, Great Britain and Wales rendered in grey tones with hatched mountain marks. A dashed route loops around the islands, with a compass rose, two sailing ships, a sea serpent and a small cross marking the land. At the base of the back, a rampant horse and a rampant lion flank a scroll banner reading Erin Alainn.

The chart came apart along its creases the way old paper does, so Nell flattened it on the galley table with the Bovril tin at one corner and the kettle at another, and studied the dashed line as if it might have shifted overnight. Her uncle Tomas had drawn it on the back of a shipping schedule: the British Isles shaded grey, hatched mountains, two little ships on a looping course, a sea serpent coiled off the Welsh coast. Across the Irish shore he had put a cross. Nobody in the family believed it marked treasure. Her mother said it marked the places Tomas had been too restless to stay.

The Mary Ellen was moored at Sharpness that October, her hold empty since the last load of timber, and the river smelled of mud and diesel. Nell had no cargo lined up and no reason to go west except the cross, and the words along the bottom of the chart, Erin Alainn, which he had sung drunk at every wedding of her childhood until the words meant nothing but the tune. She cast off at dawn and let the ebb carry her down past the bridge towards open water.

The crossing took nine days. On the tenth she found the cross: a stone slip on a headland, an iron ring rusted into the rock, and beneath a flat stone a biscuit tin holding a folded letter in her uncle's cramped capitals. No gold. Just a list of harbours where he had waited out bad weather, each with a date beside it, and at the bottom: I walked the whole route in my head every winter to see if I still could. You can stop looking now, Nell.

She sat on the slip until the light went, then rolled the chart tight and carried it back to the barge.下 the galley she smoothed it flat once more, and her thumb found the dashed line where it ran off the paper's edge and kept going across the bare table, and she understood it had never been meant to end on paper at all.
