Coastline outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black single-line outline of an irregular coastline, with inlets, islands and a branching channel, runs down the forearm from the upper inner arm toward the wrist. The linework is even and thin, with no shading or fill, so the skin shows through inside the outline. The pale skin and plain background keep the focus on the tattoo.

In the years when the kingdom of Maranel still had its harbours, the chart-maker Ysolt Fenn was ordered to draw its shore so that no ship could ever be lost on it again. The King wanted every inlet named and every rock given its own small mark. She took a fine pen and a sheet of salted vellum and began at the northern cliffs, where the land broke into a scatter of islands like spilt beads.

She worked without lifting the nib. Her mother had taught her that a coast drawn in one breath would hold, while a coast with stops in it would drift. So she went round the Sorrow Reach, up the branching mouth of the River Tamber, and down past the Ninepenny Isles, and the line did not break. Fishermen gathered on the palace steps to watch her hand move. Some swore the sea went quiet whenever she drew near the edge of the sheet.
When the chart was finished, the King laid his signet ring on the southern headland to hold it flat and found that it showed only a line, a outline of his own land with no water inside it. He ordered it nailed to the great door. That winter the storms came up the coast and struck the harbour mouths exactly where she had put them, and no hull split on the rocks she had marked. The King praised the chart and forgot the name of the woman who had drawn it.
Ysolt carried the last of her vellum down to the tideline at the lowest ebb of spring. She laid it on the wet sand where the real shore ran and weighted the corners with stones. When the sea came back in, the thin ink lifted from the paper and spread across the water, and the islands drifted off to find the places she had drawn for them.
