Island outline on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin, single black linework outline of an irregular island shape sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The lines are even and unshaded, with the interior left as bare skin. The photograph is taken at a close angle against a plain beige background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

You knead the dough before the shutters go up, the bowl warm against your hip and the ovens ticking as they come up to heat. The radio on the shelf is still murmuring the shipping forecast to nobody. Your aunt's handwriting is taped above the flour bin: half a pound of brown, a pinch of salt, and a line she underlined twice about never rushing the rise. You have never once rushed it.

By the proving cupboard, a paper napkin is pinned under a magnet. Someone drew the coastline of Carrig on it in blue biro, with the harbour circled and a small star for the lighthouse. Tomas, who drives the early van to the ferry terminal, brought it in last week and asked if you could bake something that would survive four hours in a cold hold. You said yes before he finished the sentence.

So you roll the dough flat, lay the napkin beside it, and cut the island out with the tin knife. The edges come out uneven where the blade slips into the inlets, and you leave them that way. You press the shape into the top of the loaf and score it deeper along the western cliffs, following the lines you have been tracing with your eye since you were small. When it comes out of the oven, the crust has darkened into a coastline that looks almost like a bruise of weather.

By the time the sky over the car park goes grey, the loaf is wrapped in a tea towel and sitting on the passenger seat. Tomas lifts it carefully, as if it might still be warm enough to feel. You wipe your hands, switch off the radio, and watch the van's tail lights bend around the corner toward the sea.
