Skull and peony flowers across hip and thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in black underwear is shown from the side, with a large tattoo of an animal skull and shell-like forms on her hip, continuing into layered peony or chrysanthemum blooms down her thigh. The work is built from fine linework combined with stippled dotwork shading that gives the skull and petals depth and texture. The tattoo is in black and grey, and the image is cropped below the chest and above the knee, so the face is not visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ram died in the February cold, and nobody on the lot wanted to be the one to dig the hole. So it was you who knelt in the frozen mud with a bucket and a bread knife, and you who carried the skull back to the wagon in a pillowcase, because the man from the museum in Leeds had written that he would take the bones if they were clean. Clean is what you are doing now, on a camping stove behind the big top, with the canvas sagging over the poles like wet washing.

There are four acts left. The strongman sleeps in his van because the caravan was repossessed in October, and the peonies Nell painted on the wagon doors have blistered and flaked since she left for the coast. You still water the pots of real peonies she grew on the back step, though it is November and they have no business flowering. Two of them do anyway, heavy and pink, folding open against the frost as if nobody had told them the season was over.

The last night in Doncaster the crowd is eleven people and a dog. You stand in the ring under one working light and bow to them anyway, the way Nell taught you, chin down, arms wide. Afterwards you go back to the wagon and find the skull bleached on the step, its sockets empty. You fill them with the two peony heads, stems snapped short, and the petals curl over the bone like a hood. In the morning you will drive it north to the museum. Tonight you leave the lamp on, and somewhere out in the dark field the bass drum keeps its slow time, though nobody is left to strike it.
