Butterfly and swirls across upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large black butterfly sits on the upper back, its wings formed from bold solid shapes with a single dot at the centre. Thin, sweeping curls and tendrils extend outward on both sides, with several small butterflies scattered among them. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the design is arranged asymmetrically across the skin with soft, even lighting.

The lift at Ledbury House had been dead for nine days when Tamsin Adeyemi started carrying the paint tins up the stairwell, two at a time, cursing the council under her breath on every landing. Fourteen floors. By the ninth she had stopped counting the doors and started counting the swallows that flicked past the broken pane at the top.

Nobody else on the estate had noticed the buddleia growing out of the gutter on the north side. It had found the one crack in the render and pushed itself into the light, purple spikes already browning at the tips. Mr Haddow from flat 3 called it a weed. Tamsin said it was a wild thing with nowhere else to be, and she wasn't going to be the one to pull it out.
On the last Friday the bush was thick with butterflies, black velvet ones with a single pale dot on each wing. When she pushed the window wide they lifted all together and poured out over the car park, tangling in the air between the blocks, curling and unfurling like wire left out in the rain. One of them came back and landed on the wet sill beside her paint tin and sat very still.
She didn't paint the sill that day. She left the lid off, balanced the brush across the rim, and sat on the top step where the light came in sideways, waiting for the lift to come back on so she could go home. The butterfly stayed on the sill. So did she.
