Wolf head on chest and shoulder

Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head is tattooed across the upper chest and shoulder, with the eyes, muzzle and ears rendered in detail. Soft grey shading gives the face depth, while loose, splattered black strokes radiate outwards across the top and right of the design. The photograph is a close, slightly angled selfie with the man's face cropped out of frame.

Snow had been falling on Quarry Farm since Tuesday, and by Thursday the top field had gone the colour of wet slate. Hannah Pryce saw the animal at the far wall before she saw its tracks. It stood with its head low, grey against the drifts, and the dark ruff at its neck looked less like fur than ink flicked outward by a hand that had not bothered to be careful.

Her father had lost two hoggs in the autumn and blamed the Ashworth dogs. Hannah had said nothing at the time. She knew those dogs were fat and idle and would never have climbed this far in weather like this, and she knew, too, that her father had stopped sleeping properly since the sale.

She shouldered the feed sack and walked slowly, the way her grandfather had taught her to approach a ewe that might bolt. The wolf did not run. Its eyes were amber and steady, and they went past her to the barn, to the lit window, to the lambing pens where forty-odd ewes pressed together and breathed steam into the cold.

She set the sack down on the wall between them and tipped it out, grain and hay cake spilling white across the snow. The wolf lowered its muzzle and ate without hurry. When Hannah looked again the wall was empty, and in the morning the tracks ran back up the hill in a long, loose spray, as if the whole animal had been thrown across the field and had landed exactly where it meant to.
