Buddha and pink lotus on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large Buddha figure with a raised palm and a small dot on the forehead dominates the upper arm, with its face and hand shaded in greys. A detailed pink lotus flower sits in the foreground at the bottom of the piece. The background is a soft blend of green and orange, giving a cloudy, painterly effect around the figure.

The winter the Harrow ditch froze solid, old Mabel Penn walked out to the stone man at the field's edge, the one her grandfather had carried up from the river in a cart. He sat cross-legged under a hood of snow, his grey face turned towards the lane, one hand lifted flat as if asking the wind to wait. Nobody on the farm had ever asked him for anything. Mabel set a heel of bread and a jar of plum jam on the wall by his knee, and she stood there until her feet ached.

The trouble was the pond. Her son Tom had sold the lower meadow to the men from the mill, and they meant to drain the pond in January to lay their pipe. The ground was hard as a skillet and the men were cheerful about it. Their foreman tapped his wristwatch when he spoke to her, as though the morning belonged to him. Mabel planted herself between the digger and the black water with her arms folded, and he laughed and said she would freeze before he did.

That evening the cloud came over the hill, orange at its edges where the sun went down behind it and green in the hollows, like weed under ice. The foreman's lamp failed twice. When the digger finally bit into the bank, its bucket came up full of mud and nothing else, and the men stood in the lamplight to look at the water. Through the ice, a single pink lotus had opened, its petals curled tight against the cold, as if it had waited years for someone to notice.

The pipe went in on the far side of the hill. In spring Tom found the stone man's raised hand turned a little towards the pond, and nobody ever moved him again.
