Buddha face with leaves on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large Buddha face with lowered eyes, a dot between the brows and wavy hair fills most of the frame. Soft greyscale shading gives the face a sculpted, realistic look, while pale leaves and dark wave swirls frame it at the edges. The photo is tightly cropped to the arm with no other elements visible.

The guard at Halden Ford had orders to search every cart, so when the widow Mirren came down the bank with a round stone head wrapped in oilcloth, he set down his tea and told her to open it. She did so without fuss. Beneath the cloth sat a face the colour of wet slate, eyes lowered as though it had just finished a sum it did not care to share, a small dot pressed between the brows and the hair carved into long curls like water going over a weir.

The guard looked for a long time. He had been told to look for gold, for powder, for letters. He had not been told what to do with a face that seemed to be listening. Mirren said her husband had carved it from the river stone and asked her to take it across before the spring melt, because the far bank was where it belonged. The guard said nothing, and after a while he found that his own eyes had dropped too, to the stones at his boots, and that he had no wish to raise them.
He waved her through. Nobody asked him about it afterwards, and he never wrote it in the book. That April the Halden came up over the ford in a single night, and the carts stuck on the near side were swept away with their drivers. The guard's hut stood on the high bank and survived. When the water dropped he walked the shingle downstream and found the stone head lodged against a willow, leaves caught in its curls and foam turning round its chin, its eyes still lowered, as if the river had simply asked it to wait.
