Buddha face and lotus on a leg
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A grey-scale carved Buddha face with closed eyes sits at the top of the design, fading into a dark temple silhouette and rocky shoreline. A pink lotus flower with soft shading fills the lower section, and the smoky background blends the elements together. The composition is vertical and fills the frame, with strong contrast between the black and grey shading and the warm pink petals.

The stone head came in on the spring tide, face up in the wrack below the lamp room, and you were the only one awake to see it. You had been trimming the wick when the sea went quiet in that way it does before a swell, and through the glass the rocks showed black and wet. Someone had carved it fine. The eyelids were half closed, the mouth held a smile that had nothing to do with the weather, and a thread of green weed ran down one cheek like a tear that had dried and stayed.

You took the hand truck down the cliff path at first light, because Mr Pardoe at the harbour office would want it logged before the salvage men came sniffing. Nobody on this coast had ever seen a statue like it. Old Ada from the chandlery said it had come off a freighter wrecked in the fifties, carrying crates of temple things to a museum in Liverpool that never got them. Nobody believed her, and you did not either, until you knelt in the shingle and saw a lotus bud carved into the base, its petals open just enough to hold rainwater.
You did not log it. You carried it up the path yourself, one slow step at a time, and set it on the gallery rail facing east, where the sun would find its closed eyes first. By the next storm the bud had filled with salt and blown clean. Some mornings after that you found a pink petal caught in the brass of the rail, though the nearest flower for miles grows in a jar in the cottage window, and you have never told anyone you put it there.
