Laughing Buddha and cherry blossom on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A smiling, closed-eyed Buddha figure with a bindu mark on the forehead and a bead necklace fills the upper part of the forearm, surrounded by red blossoms and petals. Below, a bare tree with red flowers stands against a pale ground with fallen petals. The work uses soft, detailed shading in browns and greys with red accents, and the image is a close crop of the arm against a plain grey background.

You find the Buddha in the box marked garden, wrapped in a tea towel that smells of your aunt's kitchen. He is heavier than he looks, round as a loaf, and he is still laughing at a joke nobody has told him. Your cousin Halina says he has been in the loft since the Hendersons' divorce, which is no reason to keep anything, but you carry him out anyway, past the trestle tables and the tangled fairy lights, and set him down under the cherry tree at the bottom of the lawn.

The tree is not in full flower. It is the first week of April and the petals have only just started to come off, pale pink on the wet grass, sticking to the shoes of guests who keep stepping onto the lawn to take photographs. Your fiancé has been asking since breakfast whether the vicar will mind a statue in the pictures. You tell him the vicar has seen worse, and that the Buddha has been to more weddings than either of you.

Halina's husband, Piotr, is the one who finds the chip on the nose. He crouches, squints, and says it was probably like that already, which makes you both laugh harder than it deserves. Somewhere behind you the string quartet starts tuning, and a petal lands on the smooth bald head, then slides down over the closed eyes. You leave it there. The statue has smiled through every bad year in that family, and it seems rude to brush away the one thing that has come to join in.
