Bull head tattoo on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bull's head in profile, with long curved horns, sits on the forearm against plain skin. The linework is bold, and the face and neck are filled with patterned markings and stipple-like shading. Dotted details run along the horns and the neck, and the design sits centred on the arm with a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The third night out of Montevideo, the bull in pen six wrenched its tether and stood in the scuppers staring at the sea as if someone had asked it a question. Ezequiel reached it first. He always did, with his rope looped over one hand and that low murmur he used on frightened stock, and I held the lamp while he walked it back under the deckhouse with the swell lifting our boots.

He had painted the boards of every pen himself. Lamp black and a rag, a scroll of dots down the neck, rings of stipple across the flank, the same markings his grandfather had painted on the ox carts outside Salto. Ezequiel said the dots were for the road, one for each day, so the animal would know where it had been. Mr Tilling, the master, thought it was nonsense and docked us a shilling a week for the paint. Ezequiel paid it anyway, out of his own wages, and never once argued.
We made Liverpool on a Tuesday in sleet. The beasts came down the ramp one by one, heads low, breath smoking, and the dock men counted them off on their clipboards. When the bull reached the stones it stopped, lifted its head against the grey sky and looked back up at the ship. Ezequiel tapped the rail beside him with his brush and drew a single dot in the wet air. Then he walked it into the rain, and I could still see the curve of those horns long after the rest of him had gone.
